Reincarnated.1754:

Before creating a character I usually think of a name first.
One suited to the character I am going to create.

Just thought I would be nice to be able to make some sort of tool to check on the availability of a name before going through the process of creating a character.

I like to put a bit of time and thought into making a character, but then when it comes to enter the name at the end of the process, it’s a bit depressing to find the name is taken.

Now that I took the time to suggest this, and it takes me ages to write a post, I’m going to post it anyways.
Maybe I should have made a different suggestion elsewhere asking ArenaNet to put Name choice at the beginning of the process

Lawton Campbell.8517:

That’s a good idea; I’ll put it on my backlog.

I try to whisper to that name. For example,

/w Reincarnated
hello, world!

There are three possible results:

  • (most common) ‘The player you are trying to whisper is not online’ → name not available.
  • (least common) the whisper goes through! (only happened three times since headstart) → name not available
  • (uncommon) ‘There is no player or account by that name.’ → name is available

It’s not as elegant as a name-check tool, but it gets the job done just fine.

(You can also try to add a name to your friends list or invite to your personal guild, but both those options involve undoing what you just did.)

Lishtenbird.2814:

You can also add the Name You Want to friends from the Contacts panel. -ah, already mentioned up there in the brackets

Still, as a cosplay altoholic, I’ve thought of this feature before and second the request.
